Rock, who is best known for his stand-up comedy and his sitcom Everybody Hates Chris, will play the lead role of King, while Spielberg will direct and produce the film through his company Amblin Entertainment. Rock said he was honored and excited to portray one of his heroes, who inspired him to pursue a career in comedy and activism.

Spielberg, who has directed several historical dramas such as Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, and Lincoln, said he was fascinated by King’s story and wanted to explore his personal and political struggles, as well as his legacy and impact on the world. He said he was impressed by Rock’s dramatic range and charisma, and believed he could capture the essence of King’s character and voice.

The film will cover King’s rise to prominence as a leader of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s, his involvement in campaigns such as the Montgomery bus boycott, the March on Washington, and the Selma to Montgomery marches, his relationship with his wife Coretta Scott King and his family, his conflicts with the FBI and other opponents, and his assassination in 1968. The film will also feature other prominent figures in the movement, such as Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Robert F. Kennedy.

The film is expected to start production in 2024 and be released in 2025, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington and King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. The film has already generated a lot of buzz and anticipation among fans and critics, who are eager to see how Rock and Spielberg will bring King’s life and message to a new generation of audiences.
